George Mason University, abbreviated as GMU, is a public-funded research institution located in Virginia. Established as a branch of Virginia University in 1949, GMU became an independent academic hub in 1972. In addition to the main campus at Fairfax, George Mason has three ancillary campuses in Virginia and an international campus in Song do, South Korea. The main campus of GMU is sprawling across 677 acres and is ideally located in the suburban environment, just to the south of the City of Fairfax. GMU comprises 12 colleges and schools with more than 80 undergraduate majors and 127 graduate and professional degrees. With a total enrollment of 38000 plus students, George Mason becomes the large university by headcount in the Commonwealth of Virginia. An acceptance rate of 87 percent and providing financial aid to international students make George Mason University one of the best places to study abroad. GMU is also the proud Alma Mater of numerous notable alumni such as Hala Gorani, David Jolly, and Anousheh Ansari, the first Muslim woman to go in space.
