Athens, Ohio, is home to Ohio University, a public research university founded by an Act of Congress in 1787. The university became the first of its kind in Ohio in 1802 and in 1804. It opened for students in 1809 and was the first university-based in Ohio. The University of Ohio is the oldest in Ohio and is the 10th oldest public university in the United States. The university's original architecture reflects New England and Early Americana Federalist themes. The campus is situated near the Hocking River in Athens, Ohio.
