The research-oriented and business-focused university was initially founded in the year 1880 but was formally started in the year 1884. The institute gained the status of the university by acquiring the Royal Charter in the year 1992. Since its inception, the university has been firmly and heavily focused on the research, academic, and overall excellence in the performance of students. Since its start, the university has expanded into two campuses, primarily the City Campus and the Coach Lane Campus.
